Indonesians seem to have an innate talent for arts and crafts, and there is an impressive variety of products in Indonesia, especially in Bali.
The richness of Bali's arts and crafts is generally seen because of the fertility of the lands. The Balinese consider art to be part of their everyday life. They are naturally gifted creators, benefiting from an ancestral artistic tradition. Originally their art was created for the sole benefit of their god.
There is no term for ″art″ or ″artist″ in the Balinese language. Before the advent of tourism artistic production was one occupation among others in daily life. Today it is all the time, for example during a ceremony in a temple, all the buildings are fully decorated. The daily prepared offerings are also part of the arts.
Many Balinese artists and craftsmen are still trying to produce objects that are both aesthetic and practical.
Different types of art :
- Stone Sculpture
The Balinese are masters in stone carving. Every temple, but also many houses or public buildings (banks, official buildings...) are decorated with sculptures representing, most of the time, mythological figures.

- Wood Decorative
Wood handicraft, furniture and decoration, has undergone a major evolution in the last century, from a decorative utility to a fully-fledged art form. It is the first country to have signed an agreement with the European Union on wood imports: the FLEGT licence, which aims to guarantee the legality of wood and to prevent illegally harvested wood from being placed on the European Union market, while at the same time promoting rational and legal exploitation.

- Painting
Painting is certainly the field of art where the Western influence has been strongest. The arrival of Western artists (in the 1920s and 1930s) coincided with the emergence of the concept of painting as a pure and sought-after art form that could also be sold! There are several schools of Balinese painting.

- Traditional fabric production
Fabric production is also an important part of Balinese handicrafts, especially as it is a religious obligation to dress as well as possible during temple ceremonies.
